St Mary's Church in Ticehurst

St Mary’s Church in Ticehurst was a lovely local project for old Barn Audio. A 14th century parish church and part of the Diocese of Chichester, this pretty Sussex church is a Grade II listed building.

Old Barn Audio fully specialise in church sound installations; this takes knowledge and great experience to ensure a modern system can be used within a listed or period property.

The Project

As with many old churches, the congregation were struggling to hear, as well as see the sermons. So Old Barn Audio were brought in to create a system that worked for everyone. The service or event is now audio and video transmitted to a 65” high-definition smart screen in the annexe.

A projector screen some 8 metres up in the roof now drops down on wires, then remotely unfurls silently and automatically stops at its viewing position. To be used with a remote-controlled projector, securely fixed and hidden in the church tower, some 15 metres back from the 3-metre wide 16:10 format screen yet transmits a high-definition image. This projector was also painted to match the local sandstone.

St Mary’s Church now have a fully wirelessly operated system from anywhere in the church via an iPad or smartphone. Music can be played and controlled remotely from anywhere in the building. The audio is designed such that the dispersion pattern and delivery is accurate at full frequency range to less than 2 decibels and therefore linear throughout the building.

The streaming system is controlled via high quality PTZ cameras, programmed to point and zoom to numerous destinations and auto focus at the touch of a button, for any parishioners who can’t be present.

The loop amplifier was also retained but completely re-wired and re-calibrated to now exceed RNID specifications.
