Lighting Systems For Theatres

Whether its infrastructure for a number one receiving house or a full rig for a community theatre, Old Barn can supply the right lighting systems for theatres.
Lighting Systems For Theatres

Lighting Infrastructure:

Recent advances in theatrical lighting over the past few years have completely changed the needs of the venue when it comes to infrastructure. Gone are the days of 15 amp patch panels and DMX only tie lines. Instead hard power and various data connections need to be widely available and configurable to suit the production.

Our systems are tailor designed to the venue itself and the type of equipment that will be connected. Modern panels typically contain 16 amp circuit connections back to the dimmers, hard power outs (if the dimmers do not have through power), and both RJ45 and XLR DMX outputs. Our patch panels can be configured to any size and configuration. This makes them ideal for fly floors or FOH applications. We can also install the panels to existing truss or bars or supply new pre fabricated systems.

When installing a complete infrastructure system, neatness, order and functionality are key. Typically we will install the racks at the location of the stage mains incomer. A high end dimmer such an ETC sensor rack is important in a venue with high usage. The sensor rack is also great as it has the option for through power. This means that any of your dimming points can be used as hard power for intelligent and moving lights. For a receiving house, this will be the preferred option as usage will change weekly. With the sensor racks we will have a patch rack allowing you to patch in the relevant RJ45 and DMX tie lines from around the building. We often use a combination of ETC Net 3 gateway and splitters/switches depending on the amount of points.

Lighting Fixtures

If a theatre or venue is simply looking to update their existing stock, we can also help with this. The specification of equipment will largely depend on the theatre itself and the usage. But below are a few of our favourite theatrical use fixtures:

ETC Source 4 Lustr

ETC’s x7 Colour System™ combines a balanced recipe of up to seven colours to create evocative colour mixes. The Source Four LED Series 2 Lustr array takes the idea even further, with the addition of a lime-green LED emitter. Lime green increases the luminaire’s lumen output in open white and lighter tints to make them brighter and livelier, better matching the colour of a conventional Source Four fixture. The lime also enriches colour-rendering by better marrying the red and blue ends of the colour spectrum, for truer-to-life light that fills in the gaps that ordinary LEDs leave behind.

ETC Source 4 LED Fresnel

The Source Four LED Fresnel is like no Fresnel you’ve seen before. The adapter fits any Source Four LED light engine and creates tuneable-white or brightly-coloured washes with soft edges. The light blends evenly – with smooth overlap and uniform distribution – for washes that look dazzling, even on camera! The Fresnel adapter is adept at sculpting light using traditional barn-door technology and attachments, to customize the look and shape of the light. And with the highest-quality light output, the Source Four LED Fresnel can be used in any application – on stage or in the studio.

Selador Desire

The D60 fixture is the brightest variant in the Desire™ LED luminaire family. Sixty energy-saving LED emitters are combined onto each D60 fixture to provide powerful, high-intensity output. This round, PAR-shaped washlight is ideal for the stage, studio and anywhere brightness and colour flexibility are required.

Phillips Showline SL

A wide choice of options makes the SL STRIP 400 suitable for a diverse variety of lighting design applications. Choose the RGBW LED option for washes of colour, or the tuneable white option for selective grazing and uplighting. For wet applications and outdoor environments, select the IP65 models.

Martin Mac Aura

The MAC Aura is an award-winning wash light that lighting designers have turned to the world over due to its versatility as a powerful beam and wash luminaire of the highest calibre. The result of out-of-the-box creative thinking, it is the first LED moving head wash light to combine multicolour beam LEDs with a backlight LED array that takes the synthetic look out of LED wash lights.

Robe Robin 600

Arranged in 3 concentric rings these LEDs offer unique possibilities for creating stunning colour and pattern audience blinding effects as well as for providing comprehensive and perfectly even wash coverage. This system sets the LEDWash 600 ahead of any other LED wash light products, making it a truly‚ “multi-purpose” unit, equipped also with an extremely versatile 15 – 60 degree motorised zoom, powerful fast strobing and pre-programmed pulse strobe effects.

Clay Paky Sharpy

Sharpy is a 189W moving beam light with an unprecedented brightness usually achievable only with far greater wattages. Weighing just 16 kg, Sharpy produces a perfectly parallel, laser-like beam with an incredible output of 59,760 lx at 20m (5,100 footcandles at 65 ft). Sharpy is also groundbreaking for the purity of its beam, which is sharply defined and free of any halo or discoloration around the edges. It offers 14 different colours and 17 gobos, allowing you to change the shape of the beam and create an array of spectacular mid-air effects.
With its light weight and modest footprint, Sharpy is small enough to be fitted anywhere – on trusses at live and TV events, on stage, in showrooms or conference rooms.

Chauvet Rogue R2 Spot

Rogue R2 Spot offers incredible value with a stunning range of colours and effects, all supported by professional quality engineering. Rogue R2 Spot builds on the features of the R1 Spot by adding gobo-morphing technology and two variable scrolling colour wheels for an unlimited number of shape-changing and split-colour effects. Rogue R2 Spot uses a powerful 240 W LED light source in a 16.5° beam angle for a brilliant light that creates an unparalleled audience experience.

Chauvet Rogue R2 Wash

Rogue R2 Wash is a valuable addition to rental and production inventories. Durable and dependable, this moving wash workhorse produces a bright, powerful light and offers five zones of LED control to pixel map its 19 (15 W) RGBW quad-LEDs. A standout zoom range of 12° to 49° gives it the spread to cover even the largest areas. Smooth colour mixing, simple and complex DMX channel profiles and powerCON in and out are just some of the other features that make this fixture a standout performer in any setting.

Old Barn can also facilitate a full install of all infrastructure and equipment. An example of a 300-seat proscenium arch theatre is shown below:
